Location Kurunegala district, 90 miles / 144 kilometres from Colombo and 26 miles / 42 kilometres from Kandy. History Built in 1301 AD, Yapahuwa is an ancient fortress and was the capitol of Sri Lanka for a brief period of time. Like Sigirya, the fortress of Yapahuwa is a rock rising abruptly from its surroundings to a height of about 300 feet. Attractions The fortress of Yapahuwa is surrounded by many natural and man made defences which include moats and ramparts. Many traces of other ancient defences may still be seen, while an ornamental stairway still remains its biggest showpiece. Directions From Colombo A1 North to Warakapola, A6 to Kurunegala. From Kandy A1 West to Kegalla, A19 North to Polgahawela, turn right to A6 North to Kurunegala. Getting There Yapahuwa can be reached by car, coach or train. Public transport is considered the most economical mode of transport to Yapahuwa. |
