Among the most famous wrecks in the area include the world's first oil tanker - SS Conch -which ran aground in 1903 and the first air craft carrier, H M S Hermes, sunk by the Japanese off the coast of Batticaloa. One of the most exiting finds was a 20-gun Man-of-War, carrying several hundred kilograms of 1703 silver coins in mint condition. Discovered off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, the artifacts are now displayed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D C. Shells Found in the Coastal Waters off Sri Lanka Sri Lanka's coastal waters offer diving enthusiasts and shell collectors rare and valuable finds such as the Sinistral Sacred Chank, the Volute Lyria Colveriana, the Patterned Chank, Rose branched Murex and many varieties of Cowries. Equipment, Tours and Guide Services Air tanks, re-fills and other diving gear can be rented in Colombo while leading resorts and diving centres in the South and West also provide such services.
