Sri Lanka Cycling and Mountain Biking Vacation

Cycling

The intimacy to nature, the people and their lifestyles that cycling / biking provides can seldom be matched by any other recreational activity.

From the smooth carpeted highways to the gravel pathways, Sri Lanka's size, varied landscapes and convenience to places of interest make it a paradise for cycling and biking buffs. Your cycling / mountain biking vacation in Sri Lanka will take you through picturesque mountains and valleys, ancient ruins, farmland, and so much more.

Delivering the bikes by train is the best option if the starting point of your cycling adventure is located close to a railway station. The delivery regulations at the Fort Railway Station, Sri Lanka's main railway hub insist that bikes be brought to the station two hours before departure. This is so that the loading can be done without too many hassles.

Sri Lanka's ancient city areas are considered to be the best for biking or cycling. In fact, areas in and around Sri Lanka's ancient capital city of Anuradhapura, the rock fortress Sigiriya, and the ruins of Polonnaruwa feature cycling trails along canals, tanks and lush foliage. As a matter of fact, bicycles are considered to be the best mode of transport for exploring the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.

The hilly areas of central Sri Lanka feature long and windy roads through picturesque mountains and lush valleys. This combined with the relatively cooler climate makes conditions ideal for cycling and biking.

Some of the most popular cycling / biking trails in the hill country include a ride from the hill capital of Kandy, to the less crowded magnificent Knuckles mountain range. This trail is ideal for mountain biking. You can continue on the same route to the city of Nuwara Eliya, which is also known as 'Little England'. Then proceed on to the misty and highly grassy plateau of Horton Plains, home to the sambhur deer and the bear monkey.

The government of Sri Lanka is hoping to implement a national cycling and biking trail which covers the island's best riding areas. The main objective of this project is to make Sri Lanka the preferred destination for cycling and biking adventures in Asia. The first completed section of this mega project is the 149.1-mile / 240-kilometre southern coastal trail from Wadduwa to Unawatuna.

Riders are advised to prepare themselves before commencing their biking or cycling journey.

Although many cool spots / wayside stalls offering cool drinks and snacks are available, plenty of water should always be taken. Carry adequate amounts of sunscreen and a raincoat since the Sri Lankan weather is tropical and highly changeable. Also carry with you, any spare parts or other travelling gear. In short, be as independent as possible!
