The great fortress of Sigiriya stands out as one of the greatest architectural and artistic achievements by ancient islanders. Beautiful carved rock surfaces, ponds, pillars and of course the world renowned frescoes are cultural heritages unlike any other. Masters in water management, ancient Sri Lankan irrigation systems and water management plans include vast man made lakes, networks of canals, and intricate water controlling systems, which even today are considered to be some of the finest achievements in engineering. Today, wood carving, weaving, pottery, and metalwork are highly developed crafts in Sri Lanka. The town of Ambalangoda is popular for the colourful craft of mask making. These masks or 'Wes Muhunu' as they are called by locals are beautiful and are loved by many tourists. Sri Lanka is famous for precious gems. Ratnapura, in the south-central region of the island is the central location for the gem trade. The typical Sri Lankan cuisine is dominated by rice and curry, often fiery hot. Sinhalese dancing is similar to Indian dance but relies on acrobatics, nimbleness and symbolism to unfold its narratives.
