Kalutara Vihara
The Kalutara Vihara is located just south of the Kalutara Bridge and is the only dagoba (Buddhist shrine) in the world that is hollow. Its painted interior contains 74 murals, each depicting different aspects of the life of Lord Buddha.

Location Information:

Kalutara town is located 26.8 miles / 43 kilometres south of Colombo and was once an important spice-trading centre. The Portuguese, Dutch and British controlled it at different times in history. Today it is renowned for its fine basket ware and for the best mangosteen fruit on the island.

Kalutara obtained its name from the Kalu Ganga or 'Black River'. South of the Kalutara Bridge is the Kalutara Temple, which was built in the 1960s. Motorists frequently stop at the shrine and Bo tree on the main road to say a prayer and make offerings to ensure a safe journey.
