Getting Around

By Bus

Travelling by bus is one of the most economical modes of travel in Sri Lanka. The buses range from modern air-conditioned coaches for long journeys to mini-buses which are most often used for short routes. As most locals travel by bus, the buses tend to get crowded and therefore are better avoided when travelling with lots of luggage. But for travellers willing to brave it, a trip in a bus is definitely an unforgettable experience.

Car Hire with Driver

Many travel companies offer car and driver facilities for a few days or even weeks at a fairly reasonable rate. Having a driver can be of great assistance as most Sri Lankan drivers in the tourist industry are very knowledgeable about their country and therefore can double as a guide (for which a reasonable tip is expected and usually given without hesitation). Surprisingly, it is more economical to hire a car with a driver than without. Accommodations for drivers is no hassle as most often Sri Lankan hotels offer free driver's quarters and only charge a small sum for meals.

Car Rental

Conventional wisdom maintains that self-drive car rental in Sri Lanka cannot be recommended for visitors due to the unfamiliar and often intimidating driving conditions. Many Sri Lankans, especially in rural areas are less aware of road rules and pedestrians tend to walk along the middle of the road for the lack of pavements. Another reason for care during driving is the many slow moving motorised and non-motorised vehicles on the Sri Lankan roads. Night driving can also be dangerous as many bicycles on the road do not have lights and roads in the interior regions of the island often are poorly lit.

Taxi

Fleets of efficient, metered taxis can be found in Colombo and several other major cities in Sri Lanka. The more economical taxi-van which became popular a few years ago is also a great choice for transport in Sri Lanka. However in the resorts and smaller towns and villagers, one will find a several varieties of taxis which include metered and un-metered ones as well. Travellers should take care to negotiate prices in advance. Many taxi companies also provide special rates for long term hires which can be several days.

Three-wheeler

Generally known as a trishaw in Sri Lanka, the three-wheeler is a very popular mode of transport within city limits. As most three-wheelers are un-metered, it is better advised to negotiate a price in advance. Advantageous during traffic hours due to its small size, the three-wheeler offers very little hassle when parking. Many three-wheelers can also be hired for long distances and are reasonably priced. Sometimes the three-wheeler can be noisy and provide bone-shaking rides along the less-than-perfect roads, but still remains a favourite with many.

Motorbike

Motorbikes are popular means of transport in both the cities and towns of Sri Lanka. Not only is it a young person's conveyance, but is also often the family means of transport.

For travellers, the motorbike can be a fun way to explore Sri Lanka, but also requires the similar level of care when on the road, as when renting a self-drive car. For individual tourists or couples travelling light, the motorbike can be a very economical way to get around. Many resort towns such as Negombo, Hikkaduwa and Kandy offer Bike rental facilities.
