Leisure >> Region >> Adam's Peak Adam's Peak The native language refers to this glorious mist covered peak as the Sri Pada, a name derived from the English phrase 'the blessed footprint'. The myth clouding the high peak in the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka is of over two millennia. It's believed to be protecting the footprint of the Lord Buddha with the help of the 'devala', an abode of the gods, surrounding the temple atop the peak. Pilgrims from all around Sri Lanka visit this temple in the cold month of December, when it is open for public viewing. Interestingly, the footprint is also believed to be of significance to other religions as well, because the Islamic community believe it is an imprint left by Adam, while the Hindu's believe it's the footprint of God Siva. Recognised as one of the highest peaks in Sri Lanka, towering over 7500 feet, Adam's Peak is among the most visited and renowned geographical locations in the country. The trek up the mountain is done via three routes, all of which provide breathtaking scenery, cool breezes, shady trees and flowing crystal streams. |
